Altocumulus floccus (Ac flo)

Diese Altocumulus–Art beschreibt den flockenförmigen Ac, wie er als typischer Vorbote von Schauern und Gewittern hauptsächlich aus der warmen Jahreszeit bekannt ist.

Altocumulus floccus entwickelt sich durch konvektive Hebung der Luftschichten im mittleren Niveau. Die Wolke entsteht sowohl unmittelbar als eigenständige Art als auch durch Weiterentwicklungen aus bereits vorhandenem Ac stratiformis oder oft auch aus Ac castellanus. Daneben kann sich Ac floccus auch aus der Umbildung anderer Wolkengattungen entwickeln, zum Beispiel aus Cumulus oder Cumulonimbus (siehe auch Altocumulus cumulonimbogenitus).

Wenn Ac floccus am Himmel auftaucht, sieht das in der klassischen Form so aus:

This species of Altocumulus describes the tuft-like Ac clouds that are typically precursors of thundery conditions, especially during the warmer months.

Altocumulus floccus develops through convective lifting of the air at the middle level. The cloud forms both directly as a distinct type and through the further development of an existing Altocumulus stratiformis or, often, Altocumulus castellanus. In addition, Altocumulus floccus can also develop by the transformation of other cloud types, such as Cumulus or Cumulonimbus (see also Altocumulus cumulonimbogenitus).

When Ac floccus appears in the sky, it looks like this in its classic form:

Charakteristisch ist die Flockenform der Wolke mit zerrissenen, zerfransten Rändern ohne(!) eine einheitliche Wolkenunterseite (wie z.B. bei Cumulus). Die Wölkchen ähneln vielmehr kleinen, zerfetzten Wattebäuschen.

A characteristic feature is the cloud's tuft-like, flaky shape with ragged, frayed edges, without(!) an uniform undersurface (as seen, for example, in Cumulus clouds). The little clouds resemble small, tattered cotton balls.

Relationship Between Altocumulus floccus and Altocumulus castellanus

Sehr häufig treten Ac floccus und Ac castellanus gemeinsam auf, wobei oft Übergangsformen zu beobachten sind. Das sieht man in den folgenden Bildern. Sie zeigen jeweils Gruppen von Ac floccus, wobei sich einzelne Wolkenflocken jedoch auch auf gemeinsamen Wolkenbänken aufreihen. Diese Wolkenreihen sind als Ac castellanus zu klassifizieren.

Ac floccus and Ac castellanus very often occur together, and transitional forms are frequently observed. This can be seen in the following images. Each shows groups of Ac floccus, although individual cloud flakes are also lined up on a common cloud base. These rows of clouds are then classified as Ac castellanus.

…ein voll entwickelter Altocumulus floccus zeigt aber mitunter auch massive Quellformen, wobei die cumuliformen Wolkentürme mächtig in die Höhe emporwachsen können:

…however, a fully developed Altocumulus floccus sometimes also exhibits massive, bulging parts, with the cumulus-like, towering cloud rising high into the sky:

Diese Wolkentürme können sich bei idealen Bedingungen zu großen Schauer- und Gewitterwolken entwickeln (“elevated convection”), damit erfolgt dann eine Umwandlung von Ac floccus in Cumulus altocumulogenitus bzw. Cumulonimbus altocumulogenitus.

Das folgende Bild zeigt aus Ac floccus entstandene Cumulus congestus (im Vorfeld von Gewittern), typisch ist die gitternetzähnliche Struktur der Wolkenunterseite, die auf Ac floccus bzw. Ac castellanus als Mutterwolke hindeutet:

Under ideal conditions, these towering parts can develop into large shower and thunderstorm clouds (“elevated convection”), resulting in the transformation of Ac floccus into Cumulus altocumulogenitus or Cumulonimbus altocumulogenitus.

The following image shows Cumulus congestus that developed from Ac floccus (ahead of thunderstorms); a typical feature is the grid-like structure of the undersurface of the clouds, which indicates that Ac floccus or Ac castellanus were the parent clouds:

…denn vor allem die Floccus-Formen in der Morgen- und Abenddämmerung sind deutliche Hinweise auf eine bevorstehende Wetteränderung, meist verbunden mit Schauer- und Gewitterbildung.

Eine unmittelbar bevorstehende Wetteränderung ist auch dann zu erwarten, wenn tagsüber Ac floccus unterhalb von As auftritt, wie in folgendem Bild zu sehen. Diese Konstellation beobachtet man häufig im Vorfeld schwerer Gewitter:

…because the Floccus forms at dawn and dusk, in particular, are clear indications of an impending weather change, usually associated with showers and thunderstorms.

An imminent weather change can also be expected when Ac floccus appears below As during the day, as shown in the following image. This pattern is frequently observed ahead of severe thunderstorms:

Altocumulus floccus undulatus

Ac floccus treten in der Regel in isolierter, unregelmäßiger Form auf. Bisweilen können sich die Ac-Flocken jedoch in kleinen Reihen anordnen. Dies ist dann Altocumulus floccus undulatus (siehe auch Altocumulus undulatus):

Ac floccus typically appear in isolated, irregular formations. Occasionally, however, the clouds may arrange themselves in small rows. This is then known as Altocumulus floccus undulatus (see also Altocumulus undulatus):

Altocumulus floccus radiatus

Werden diese Wolkenreihen größer, erfolgt nicht selten eine Umwandlung in Ac castellanus. Solange jedoch noch keine gemeinsame Wolkenbank erkennbar ist, aus der die Wolkenköpfe emporwachsen, handelt es sich um Altocumulus floccus radiatus (siehe auch Altocumulus radiatus):

When these rows of clouds are growing larger, they often transform into Ac castellanus. However, as long as there is no common cloud base from which the cloud tops are rising, they are classified as Altocumulus floccus radiatus (see also Altocumulus radiatus):

Altocumulus floccus duplicatus

Auch Ac floccus kann in manchen Fällen in der Unterart “Duplicatus” auftreten. In diesem Fall sind die Floccus-Formen doppelt oder mehrfach übereinander geschichtet, wie in den folgenden Bildern zu sehen ist (siehe auch Altocumulus duplicatus):

In some cases, Ac floccus can also occur in the variety “Duplicatus”. In this case, the Floccus forms are stacked in two or more layers on top of one another, as can be seen in the following images (see also Altocumulus duplicatus):

Weitere Unterarten wie Lacunosus, Sonderformen und Begleitwolken kommen bei Ac floccus nur sehr selten vor. Pileus kann in der Tat unter Umständen auch über den Gipfeln besonders ausgeprägter Türmchen vorkommen (obwohl die Wolkenklassifikation dies für Ac flo nicht vorsieht). Mamma tritt aufgrund der nach oben gerichteten Luftströmung innerhalb der Wolke an Ac floccus kaum auf, dafür kommt Virga umso häufiger vor (im Gegensatz zu dem recht seltenen Auftreten von Virga an Ac castellanus).

Other varieties such as Lacunosus or supplementary features and accessory clouds occur only very rarely in Ac floccus. Pileus may, in fact, also occur above the summits of particularly prominent turrets under certain circumstances (although there is no cloud classification for this in Ac flo). Due to the upward air current within the cloud, Mamma is rarely observed in Ac floccus, whereas Virga occurs much more frequently (in contrast to the relatively rare occurrence of Virga in Ac castellanus).

Für die charakteristische Krümmung der Fallstreifen unterhalb der Wolke ist übrigens weniger der Wind, sondern hauptsächlich der Verdunstungsprozess der Niederschlagspartikel verantwortlich. Denn dadurch werden diese kleiner und somit ihre Fallgeschwindigkeit herabgesetzt. Dadurch können sie dann wiederum durch den Höhenwind leichter verfrachtet werden. Siehe hierzu auch die Ausführungen zu Altocumulus virga.

By the way, the characteristic curvature of the trails below the cloud is caused less by the wind and more by the evaporation of the precipitation particles. This process causes the particles to shrink, thereby reducing their fall speed. As a result, they can then be more easily carried by the upper-level wind. Schreitet die Verdichtung von Ac floccus weiter voran, entsteht (nach einer vorübergehenden wellenförmigen Grundstruktur, siehe hierzu auch Ac castellanus) mehr und mehr eine netzartige bzw. schachbrettartige Unterseite miteinander verflochtener Ac floccus (bzw. Ac castellanus), oft unterhalb von Altostratus und im unmittelbaren Vorfeld von Schauer- und Gewitterbildungen:

As the accumulation of Ac floccus continues, a net-like or checkerboard-like undersurface of Ac floccus (or Ac castellanus) gradually forms (following a temporary undulating structure; see also Ac castellanus), often beneath Altostratus and in the immediate vicinity of shower and thunderstorm formations:

Mit dem Erscheinen der verschiedenen Formen von Ac floccus ist in vielen Fällen eine erhebliche Veränderung der lokalen Wetterverhältnisse zu erwarten.

With the appearance of various forms of Ac floccus, a significant change in local weather conditions can be expected in many cases.
